Summer Jan-Feb 2012
We were lucky enough to have some great sessions in NZ's South Island over the New Year! SUP surfing in the Catlins, epic winds & waves on the South Coast, then nice breezes in Oamaru & Christchurch on our return! The first two weeks of January we had light winds, but this soon changed, now great winds have returned & lots of riding at the beach & Estuary! Kite lessons are being well received & we're busy making hay while the sun shines!! The Canterbury Kiteboarding Champs kicked off with great sea breeze winds, so a Slider Jam was held Friday night to kick it off. Saturday saw building winds throughout the day, early registrations, then a wave comp at South Brighton Beach before the Freestyle event at the Estuary! Strong winds prevailed & the event was a wrap by 7pm...results here...
KITESCHOOL- busy as with lessons, while the wind keeps blowing, we'll keep teaching...lessons book now!!

EVENT- 2012 Kitesports Challenge...March 10-11th we'll be kiting up a storm at South Brighton Beach! December & summer comes to Christchurch!
Fun times here in Christchurch with warm conditions prevailing now we're into summer! If no wind, SUPing is taking hold too, so much so we're converting our showroom to accommodate the NEW 2012 collection from Simon Anderson & Luke Short Designs, arriving in the next week... not forgetting Red-Air 2012 Inflatable models arriving after Xmas!! Stocking fillers are flying out the door too from our online shop, whether it's an Aerobie flying disc, Stunt or Trainer kite, we've got something ACTIVE for everyone in the family!!
KITESCHOOL- What a great build up to the festive season we're having here at Kitesports! We've been swamped by keen newcomers to our awesome sport wanting get out & experience what kiteboarding is all about! Keen to please, we've been out teaching every opportunity, with the summer sea breeze being kind it's great to see new kiters progress & enjoy our sport!!
Anyway, back to work... so keep yourself safe this Christmas season & enjoy a break with friends & family:-)

The ESTUARY is now clear for watersports use...with 'locals' comments that our famous kite spot is better than ever with clean clear water & still a resonable tide level to ride!! October & Springtime in Christchurch!
Just returned from the 2011 NZ Kiteboard Nationals up in Tauranga! Great conditions for this labour weekend event with strong gusty westerly winds... this had riders rigging all their kites & having to choose carefully to get the right kite for heats at the Ferguson Park side of Tauranga Harbour! Riding for team Kitesports & Ocean Rodeo Kites we had Anthony Hopkins & Su Kay. Ant, riding in the Junior division worked his way through his heats, nailing some huge L Mobes & various other powered bar pass combos to take out 3rd in Freestyle!! Well done Ant, freestyle on a 6m in a gusty 35 knots was pretty full on I bet! Su Kay with her super smooth style of riding landed nearly everything from raileys to wrapped, then did them all riding switch!! She certainly stood out & progressed to the top spot coming 1st in Woman's Freestyle!! Su also ripping into the Boarder Cross event & coming 1st again!...actually all the girls raced hardout through the winding course & jumping the inflatables to the finish! (the same cannot be said about the mens heats, as hook ups & falls were prolific:-/ For Top National Results www.windaddiction.co.nz/News/
We've been getting a few nice spring days of riding ourselves here at Christchurch beaches, & up at Waikuku Estuary & beach. The Council still has us waiting to get back on our flat water spot in ChCh, but sounds like it's not far off... kite lessons have started too, Waikuku & our local beaches the best options for getting people stoked on our awesome sport!
CWA Events- the Lake Clearwater Camp is only a couple of weeks away. Camping by the fresh water lake all of the long weekend in mid November...usually strong NW winds, but all wind directions work at Lake Clearwater. More details www.cwa.org.nz

September 2011 Newsletter
WANAKITE was a HUGE success with 8 days of snowkite action for the big numbers of people that attended! Thanks to: Snowfarm, SnowparkNZ, NZkiteboardMAG, Airbanners.com, OZONE, all the Wanakiters who came, kited hard, partied hard, & lived to kite another day! We had spring conditions for the first few days, then the big freeze & a wee bit of the fresh for the last few, just like icing on a cake...no big dumps of pow during the Wanakite week like we usually get, but next year we'll make good!
Christchurchs beaches have been given the all clear just in time for spring! Earthquakes aside, repairs almost complete on the Ch-Ch infrastructure means we can look forward to a long hot summer of kiteboarding here in the once 'Garden City'... now just waiting on clearance for getting back out on our famous flat water spot!!

WANAKITE 2011 is coming!!
Just over a week now till the annual 'Wanakite Snowkite Freeride' & mother nature has been very kind & dealt out a great BIG storm system, delivering a heap of snow right across the country!!!
I thought Snowfarm on the Pisa Range was looking pretty good before this latest dump...now it's heaving with the white stuff, waiting there for all you kiters from all over NZ!!!
This years WANAKITE is set to be the biggest yet, so come to Wanaka for the week from the 27th August to the 3rd September & check it out!

Big snow in July!
Winter has come all at once here in New Zealand during July.......starting with Big snowfalls three weeks ago into the Wanaka region, & ending with a huge dump right into and around Christchurch....the likes of which (for Ch-Ch that is) we haven't seen since 1992!!
So with all this weather there has been heaps of wind....I think the 4m Access (high wind kite) has been the most used kite so far! We've managed to squeeze a heap of days in snowkiting between Wanaka & Hanmer the last few weeks, Snowfarm heaving with deep snow, great for running our snowkite lessons, & the craziest session last Monday on South Brighton beach, even riding the snow covered sand dunes! Looking ahead, more snow this weekend and then hopefully more stable conditions for teaching as it would be great to be converting all the enquires we're getting into snowkite lessons & share the stoke!! I’ve been holding off on sending out a newsletter until something newsworthy came to me…today it did.. WINTER! No I’m not kidding.. winter has now arrived in New Zealand!
Until now, looking online at any of the snow cams at any ski resort around the country would have you feeling pretty miserable, but all that is now changing & hopefully continues to change over coming weeks!
Snowkite NZ- Our first trip south for the winter is coming later this week at: The New Zealand Mountain Film Festival
“The 2011 New Zealand Mountain Film Festival is a combination of events over five days July 1st to 5th in NZ's premier alpine village of Wanaka”
We’ll be talking up how epic the Snowkiting is in Wanaka at the first 2 days of the festival & maybe if we’re really lucky, sneaking up the hill for a kite! The forecast is for pretty nice weather so we’ll just have to see…

Cooler weather here during April, southerly blasts have caused a sudden temperature
drop, first snow on the hills. Probably won’t last, well, until the next front comes through!
Anyway it’s good to see local buggy & landboards making the most of the seabreezes
that are still come in & adding a bit of colour to our quite beaches (post quake) now
there’s a couple of kite sports that can’t be stopped, landbased kite action!!
Anyway, rather than wait for the snow to settle on the hills I’m taking off to warmer
temperatures for a couple of three weeks… the northern Hemisphere calls, stay
turned on the Kitesports Facebook page for updates KITESPORTS New Zealand.
On my return it will be snow time, this means we’ll be tuning up the snow sled &
getting SNOWKITE NZ kiting up a storm round south island ranges, tune into
SNOW KITE NZ Smack a ‘like’ on this page & we’ll keep you updated with the kite
action all winter long!

The chaos of the Christchurch earthquake on February 22ndhit hard for the
city centre & eastside suburbs. The city still cordoned as workers try make
it safe for people to return. For those of us that stayed in our homes, we’re
trying to get things back on track, even with limited power, water & no sewer…
then, hearing of Japans 9M off their coast Friday evening, followed by coverage
of a horrendous Tsunami taking out everything in it’s path, & potential nuclear
power plant meltdowns.. this has me reeling! How easily the world we’ve
built upon, & lives we’ve created for ourselves can be stripped from us
within a heartbeat or turn of mother earth! My heart goes out every person
worldwide affected by any type of disaster & I wish you strength in your time
of trial.
At Kitesports we were & are lucky we could just pick up the pieces, clean up & carry
on, back in business a week after the Ch-Ch quake. In saying that, I’m very
impressed by the work being done around the city & help coming from far & wide
outside of Ch-Ch to get everyone back on track, obviously a longer road for some,
but we’ll get there!

Over Labour weekend kitings longest running event 'The Mighty Moose Meet' was
held again up at Muriwai Beach on Aucklands west coast for the 16th year running.
50kms up the black sand beach we camped in the huge sand dunes, kite buggying
on the moon like landscape, landboarding the hard sand beach & kitesurfing the
wild west coast swell, plus kiteboarding the super flat water of the Kaipara Harbour.
This is where we got to check out our latest toy for the Kitesports shop, RED Air
Inflatable SUPs! I was really surprised how these SUPs (Stand Up Paddle boards)
performed, & so will you...come check them out & demo/hire one as we now have
stock. They pump up to 17 PSI & you can't tell their inflatable!
After the Moost Meet we headed north & caught up with Dave & Su Kay at Ruakaka
Kitesports, Su is stoked on the new Ocean Rodeo Razor kites she got to demo &
will be riding them this summer! Nice one Su, great to have you onboard:-) They've
been busy adding a Cable Park to their list of attractions at the Ruakaka kite spot, so
I'm sure they'll be having a busy summer!
This weekend coming is show weekend in Canterbury, with it comes the annual CWA
Lake Clearwater Camp, check out www.cwa.org.nz for details. We'll be out there from
Friday through till Sunday, kiting the fresh water lake, SUPing when it's calm, & getting
the boat out for some wakeboarding too...If you can't make the weekend, try come for

SPRING News 1st October 2010
It's been a crazy month since the 'Wanakite Snowkite Freeride'...after 7 days of
epic riding I was shaken awake by the biggest earthquake I've ever felt in my life
(& I was in Wanaka 5hrs drive away from it's centre!) It's hard to imagine how bad
it was for family, friends, & everyone in Christchurch & surrounding areas...soon
after this the phone calls & texts came flooding in! "Everyone OK" that's the most
important thing I heard:-) Driving back into Christchurch & around the suburbs
days later, this is when all the real mess started to sink in...but only a few weeks
later strong hearted Christchurch is recovering!! Hopefully our presious Estuary
will be back online soon too...Been a busy month since then, had two more
brilliant trips to snowkite paradise, teaching & riding,I also had the fun job of
spending a week training the 'Action Heros' on the making of the new WEET-BIX
commercial up in Kaikoura...my boy Josh lucky enough to join me & help out...
stoked!Look out for it's first showing on Sunday October 10th!

few weeks from our epic sessions for the week of Wanakite...Michelle Dickinson certainly needs a mention for her video 'diarys' of the various snowkite

19th August 2010 Just over a week away we have the annual "Wanakite Snowkite Freeride" with the biggest contingent of riders from all over New Zealand coming for this years freeride event! Hi everyone,
The cold air during July has preserved the snow condition on the Pisa Range in Wanaka, still some soft stuff about. But, after 3 weeks of no new snow it's refreshing to get some good southerlies finally come through. This week we got fresh snow, with more coming:-) The timing of this is great, as we are getting good interest in Snowkiting lessons & my next mission south will be Monday next week! With these frontal systems comes good wind too, so I'm hoping for some epic snowkite action & untracked conditions!

My first trip to Wanaka this winter is next week...the SNOWKITE NZ team will be canvasing Wanaka & Queenstown, getting the new SNOWKITE NZ Q'town store all geared up with lots of NEW kiting kit from OZONE kites, plus getting ourselves up the hill to slay some powder!!!!Looking forward to lots of fun in the snow this winter...so get hold of us & we'll get you snowkiting too!
